How to Wash and Care for Your Shapewear

Proper care helps your shapewear maintain its fit, stretch and appearance. Because fabrics and construction can vary, always begin by checking the care label and the instructions on the individual product page.

Read the Care Label First

The manufacturer’s care label provides the most accurate instructions for your garment. If those instructions differ from this general guide, follow the label.

Hand Washing

Hand washing is a gentle option for many shapewear garments.

  1. Fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water.
  2. Add a small amount of mild detergent.
  3. Gently move the garment through the water without twisting or scrubbing it aggressively.
  4. Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear.
  5. Press out excess water gently. Do not wring the garment.

Machine Washing

If the care label permits machine washing, place the garment in a mesh laundry bag and use a delicate cycle with cold water. Fasten hooks, zippers or clasps before washing to help prevent snagging.

Wash shapewear with similar colors and lightweight fabrics. Avoid washing it with towels, jeans or garments that have exposed zippers or rough hardware.

Choose a Mild Detergent

Use a gentle detergent and avoid excessive amounts. Unless the product label specifically allows them, avoid bleach and fabric softener, which may affect delicate or elastic fabrics.

Air Dry When Possible

After washing, reshape the garment and lay it flat or hang it to air dry away from direct heat. High dryer temperatures may affect elastic fibers and garment shape.

Do not iron shapewear unless the care label specifically states that ironing is safe.

Rotate Between Garments

If you wear shapewear regularly, rotating between garments gives each piece time to return to its original shape between uses. It also makes it easier to wash garments gently rather than relying on high heat for faster drying.

Store It Carefully

  • Make sure the garment is completely dry before storing it.
  • Fold it gently instead of stretching or compressing it tightly.
  • Keep hooks and zippers closed to reduce snagging.
  • Store it away from direct sunlight, moisture and heat.

Check the Fit Over Time

Normal wear can gradually change the fit of elastic garments. If your shapewear no longer stays in place, feels uneven or has damaged seams, review its condition before wearing it again.

Gentle washing, air drying and careful storage can help you get the best everyday use from your Unika shapewear.
